After college, and Table Rock State Park!

Updatey Time!
After college, I got graphic design job at a church in my hometown, and I started my own freelance business where I create animations and illustrations for people all over the world. My first project was for a person in the Netherlands, who was part of D&AD. After that, illustrations for a church in CA and now I'm creating the images and animations for an Iphone game company in Israel. As far as being out of school- deadlines still exist and stink just as much, but it is nice being able to make a dent in my gigantic school loan by drawing.

Also, Shandon has been having more time to spend more time outside sine he's done with school- something that I think is good for both of us! We go biking, hiking, kayaking (well, not so much kayaking since it got cold) and our next project will be making birdhouses with my Dad! On the weekends, we usually visit Table Rock State Park, where we volunteer with whatever they need. It's kind of a long drive to make, but SO WORTH IT when you get there and see this sort of thing:

and

We go hiking every time we're there and each time, I can go a little further than the time before. I'm still a total wimp though, because it seems like Shandon could probably go several more miles than me. He's very patient with me and doesn't mind heading back when I get exhausted :)

In effort to become more of a "team asset" to the park, I have begun to try and make some posters here and there for their bulletin boards. Here's the first one I made. What do you think?

Graniteville Mill in SC

This is a drawing I made of one of the old mills in Graniteville, SC. The first drawing of this area can be found here. I liked this drawing in black and white, so I decided not to color it. Now let's just hope they can restore this old building and put some jobs back in South Carolina! Goodness knows the people here need it!

Totterrot

by me

by Shandon

Shandon and I were having fun yesterday drawing a character he invented. His name is Totterrot. (I hope I spelled that right.) He was inspired by this photo- and then was transformed to be an armless man who uses his beard to grab things. He travels very easily.

GVW Brownfields

Near my hometown, there's this great project starting where they're taking land that has been previously developed on(and has since been abandoned, idled or contaminated), and doing extensive environmental cleanup- essentially "recycling" the land- and preparing it for new uses. They're calling the used land "Brownfields", its opposite being "Greenfields."

There are many advantages to using Brownfields rather than Greenfields. Some advantages are that there is already an existing support infrastructure, community improvement, cost avoidance (for construction), job creation, and reduction of urban sprawl. There are so many benefits to recycling Brownfields, but one of the most notable is the preservation of agricultural farmland, (which, my wonderful boyfriend Shandon tells me is being lost at a rate of 2 acres per minute in the United States)

Shandon got involved in this green-initiative and he's been going through a lot of training courses that will prepare him to sample, study, and decomtaminate the land and buildings of various types of pollutants. (In a way, he's learning how to be a more effective 21st century Adam, learning to take care of and keep the land we've been given- which was the first instruction God ever gave man.)

He has gotten me interested in what he's learning and a few weeks ago, he drove me around in Graniteville and showed me some of the old buildings and mills that are (hopefully) going to be restored to a usable and safe environment. Here's one of the buildings we visited. It's name is Hickman Hall and it was built in 1907.

Tiny Costuming for Stop Motion

This quarter, Dan Mackenzie of Mackmation asked me to make some tiny clothes for his next stop motion project. Here's what I came up with!

Snowman Animation

In my 3d Production class, I've been working on a 15 second animated film. Here are three frames from my animatic. The entire animation will be rendered out (tomorrow by the latest) with Maya and SCAD's Renderfarm, composited with Adobe After Effects, and cut together with Adobe Premiere. I used the opensource Blake rig.

Color Scripting for Characters

During this quarter, I've been trying my hand at developing some different color scripts for senior films that are in production here at SCAD. The characters above belong to Zane Yarbrough and will be used in ThisSideUp^ and Ilona, below, belongs to Tyler Kupferer (Base 14) and are for The Girl and the Fox.

I find playing with variations of color to be extremely relaxing. After hours of creating Maya snow- (using MEL- which means Maya Embedded Language), working out an X-sheet, or animating with the Graph Editor... there's nothing like sitting down and coloring.
